Pump Gear Set - Outer Gear

This is believed to be the pump body side of the outer gear.

The excess wear is on the tooth area where it meshes with the inner gear.

How much fluid would have to be in the sump for the pump to work?

Is this the "smoking gun" that indicates the exact oil level on the pump at failure?

Was the very bottom edge of this gear immersed in oil, thus allowing the outside edge to pick up some oil and lubricate the outside while centrifugal force kept it from lubricating the geared area?

This might explain the total lack of wear on the outer portions of these surfaces.

If this is the case, it is obvious why the pump was not pumping.

A close up of the body side of the outer gear clearly shows the difference in wear from the tooth area to the outer rim.

Again, a closeup of the gear clearly shows little or no wear on the outer areas.

Bushing Inner Gear Body

This is the opposite side of the same gear, assumed to be the wear plate side.
