Converter Pump

A major indication of the failure was the bending of the tangs on the converter pump. The question really centers on did the tangs bend and cause the damage to the pump you will see in the next pages or did the damage in the pump cause the load on the tangs to increase to the point of failure?

The tangs on the converter pump are clearly bent inward.

Below are closeups of the tangs. There is obvious wear where the tangs continued repeated contact with the inner gear after the failure. Does this indicate that the gear set was locked up?

Notice the multi-directional markings on the base and side of the tangs. Was this caused by wear against the pump housing assembly due to elongation of the tube when the tangs were bent and additionally as the pump body was removed? Perhaps it was done with a grinder during the tear down in order to extract it from the pump body?

Note also the wear marks where the cylinder of the converter pump ran against the bushing surface of the pump housing. Is this normal wear?

The picture at right shows additional perspective of the multi-directional marks.
